Do you recognize this Elburn bank robber?
Elburn police have received several tips about potential suspects in Tuesday's armed bank robbery and also are looking for similarities between that incident and other recent heists in Union and Huntley, an official said Wednesday.
"We're looking at anything that might match" the other unsolved crimes, said Cmdr. Steven Smith. "We have had a couple people call with information about who they think did it, and those are being followed up on. There's nothing definitive yet."
A black-and-white surveillance image released by Elburn police shows a hooded man in the act of robbing the Fifth Third Bank at 415 S. Main St. about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities said the man, who appeared to be in his 20s, wielded a silver-plated handgun and ordered a bank teller to fill a black backpack with cash before fleeing with about $1,400.
The holdup appears similar to bank robberies March 10 in Huntley and Monday in rural Union, both of which also occurred around 2 p.m. and involved suspects whose descriptions were similar to the suspect in Tuesday's incident in Elburn.
In all three cases, police say, a young man displayed a pistol and demanded money. Investigators in each town believe their respective suspects ran to waiting getaway cars, although vehicle descriptions have differed.
Also, the suspects wore black clothes and masks in the Huntley and Union heists, while Tuesday's robber wore a brown hooded sweatshirt with yellow lettering and the hood pulled over his mouth. His height was estimated between 5 feet, 3 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches, is roughly the same as witnesses described suspects in the other robberies.
Smith said Elburn police are being assisted by the FBI, which routinely investigates bank robberies. He said anyone with information about the case should call detectives at (630) 387-8737.
