Antioch Township man indicted in drug-related death
An Antioch Township man was indicted Wednesday for allegedly supplying the drugs that led to another man's death.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Suzane Willett said Kelton Lewis, 23, is charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance in an ongoing investigation.
Willet said Lewis, of 25038 W. Crawford Road, was a guest at a North Chicago motel on the night of March 2.
Lewis met Owen Martinez, 19, a Vernon Hills resident who was in the U.S. Navy and assigned to Great Lakes training center, at the motel, Willet said.
The pair left the motel and drove to the Lindenhurst area, Willet said, where Lewis purchased heroin that he agreed to share with Martinez.
The two men returned to the motel, where Lewis inhaled some of the heroin and Martinez injected some of it into his arm, she said.
A while later, Lewis noticed that Martinez was not breathing and called for emergency help, Willet said, but not before he took syringes and other drug paraphernalia out of the room and threw them into a garbage can.
Martinez was dead by the time emergency personnel arrived, Willet said, and Lewis was taken into custody.
Police recovered what they say is evidence of the drug use from the garbage can, Willet said.
The case remains under investigation, and other charges are possible Willet said.
Lewis, who is being held on $500,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in court April 2.
