Crash diverts Rt. 53 traffic near I-90

Part of northbound Route 53 has been shut down in the Schaumburg area because of a crash.

Illinois State Police are redirecting traffic in the local lanes of northbound Route 53 onto eastbound I-90 while cleaning up a crash near Algonquin Road.

By 5:20 p.m., police were estimating the imminent return of normal traffic flows.

Officers were on the scene by 4:30 p.m., which injured one person. Major traffic backups were being reported in the area.

Deputy Schaumburg Fire Chief William Spencer said two semis and a car were involved in the collision. The only injury was the woman driving the car, who was taken in serious condition to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Spencer said responders were able to contain 70 gallons of fuel before it leaked from damaged tanks, though there was an unspecified amount of fuel that did leak from the vehicles involved.
