Walgreen foreclosure off
A Lake County sheriff's foreclosure sale of Estelle Walgreen's 138-year-old Lake Forest mansion was canceled Monday because three creditors forced her into involuntary bankruptcy. Attorneys involved in the case said the action taken against Walgreen last week in U.S. District Court means the foreclosure action is on hold and she can remain in her home for now. Controversy erupted just days after Walgreen, her children and three pigs moved into the six-bedroom, 6,810-square-foot estate home on Sheridan Road in March 2006. Neighbors Robert and Kathleen Murphy contended the 200-pound-plus pigs were a nuisance. Earle M. Jorgensen Co. of Schaumburg, Wisconsin Steel and Tube of Milwaukee and Bank of Kenosha in Wisconsin contend Walgreen owes the businesses a combined $2.1 million. The bankruptcy court action is related to Walgreen's ownership of Converse Industries Inc. in Kenosha. Lake County circuit court documents state Walgreen owed almost $2.9 million on her mortgage when a default judgment was entered against her Oct. 27. She's the former wife of Charles R. Walgreen, whose family founded the national drugstore chain.
