The Warren-Newport Public Library District serves a population of approximately 58,000 within a 55-square-mile area that covers all or most of Warren and Newport Townships, including Gurnee, Wadsworth, Park City, Wildwood, Grandwood Park, Old Mill Creek, and portions of Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Villa and Waukegan.

Visit the Holy Land: Gurnee's Harry Welton and Pastor T.M. Carroll will share slides, movie clips, music and artifacts from a combined 45 trips to Israel and neighboring countries at 7 p.m. today. Reservations are requested.

Easter closing: The Warren-Newport Public Library will be closed Sunday for Easter. Library users are reminded that most online resources are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including the library catalog, which accommodates holds and renewals, and databases with everything from health and business to consumer and homework links. The outdoor book drop, near the front entrance of the library, will be open for the convenience of library users to return materials. The drive-up book returns will not be open, however, due to potential overflow.

One Book discussions: As part of the Warren-Newport Public Library's first One Book, One Community program, Debbie Hoffman will lead several talks on Erik Larson's "The Devil in the White City." An account of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, the book relates the story of architect Daniel Burnham and serial killer H. H. Holmes. Sign up for any group. Reservations are requested:

• Hoffman will also lead a discussion at 1 p.m. April 7 at the Warren Township Senior Center.

Reverse Mortgages: Learn about reverse mortgages at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. March 26. Anne Rigwood will present information on this relatively new option for seniors experiencing financial difficulties or those who would like to find additional cash. Reservations are requested for this free program.

Friends meeting: The Friends of the Warren-Newport Public Library will meet at 1 p.m. March 27. The Friends operates the Book Ends used book room, which is open during library hours. All money received from the books goes to fund the programs that are presented at the library. New Friends are welcome.

Teens activities: Teens in sixth grade and up are invited to the Warren-Newport Public Library for a series of activities.

• The next meeting of the Anime Club is from 4 to 6 p.m. March 27.

• A drawing contest opened March 7 with a gallery showing and awards on April 20.

Free computer classes: The library offers free classes for beginning computer users: "Create an E-mail Account" at 2 p.m. April 3, and "Basic E-mail" at 1:30 p.m. April 21. Participants will have hands-on instruction in a small group setting with up-to-date equipment and teachers from the library reference staff. Reservations are required.

Movers and Shakers: Families will learn about some of Chicago's historical personalities at "Chicagoland Movers and Shakers" at 1 p.m. April 5. To kick off a month of programs related to Chicago history and events related to the World's Fair in 1893, actor Terry Lynch will depict Marshall Field, William Wrigley, Charles Walgreen, Ray Kroc and others who shaped Chicago history. Registration is required for the free program for school-age children and adults.

Preschool storytime: To help children discover the joy of books, the library will offer preschool storytimes through April 12. Online registration is under way for children ages 2 through 5 (pre-kindergarten). In addition, drop-in stories for all families are offered at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at 10 a.m. Saturdays.

Reuse-A-Shoe Days: The Warren-Newport Public Library, in cooperation with the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, invites library visitors to drop off their used athletic shoes during Reuse-A-Shoe Days through April 26. A special box will be placed in the lobby to accept donations. Though the program is sponsored by Nike, any brand of athletic shoe is accepted. Not accepted are wet or muddy shoes, sandals, flip flops, dress shoes, cleats or boots. Nike grinds the shoes for conversion to playground surfaces and other uses.

Gather and stitch: From 6 to 9 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month all stitchers are welcome to come the library to enjoy a relaxing evening of sharing and conversation while working on projects and learning new stitches. The informal group session is open to all levels and needlecrafts, including knitting, quilting, cross stitch, crochet, tatting and crewel. Young stitchers with an adult are also welcome. The library's collection includes hundreds of books on hand and needle crafts

One Book, One Community: The library has announced its first One Book, One Community program. Everyone is invited to read "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson, a best-selling and award-winning book set in Chicago during the World Columbian Exposition of 1893, and discuss it at several scheduled events. More than 100 paperback copies of the book are available for check out. Book discussions have been scheduled, and the program will close with special performances during National Library Week in April. All programs require registration.
