Home show canceled due to lack of exhibitors

A longtime spring staple, the GLMV Chamber of Commerce's 2008 annual home improvement show has been canceled.

Organizers said they pulled the plug on the event -- set for March 28-30 at Libertyville High School -- because they couldn't get enough exhibitors.

In previous years, more than 100 exhibitors worked the show. Only 30 had signed up so far, chamber spokeswoman Carol Levin said.

Levin blamed the low interest on an oversaturation of home shows in the Chicago area. The group is aware of more than two dozen home shows that already have occurred in the area, and Levin said at least three others were scheduled the same weekend as the GLMV event.

The struggling economy also was a factor, Levin said.

"(It's) definitely a sign of the times, as things have slowed for the home industry," she said.

The show would've been the 19th annual for the group, which serves the Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein and Vernon Hills areas.

It's typically an opportunity for residents to learn about landscaping, home remodeling, decorating and other improvement techniques and to meet professionals in those fields.

A health fair scheduled for June is still a go.

The group will re-evaluate the type of public shows it will stage, Levin said.
