Wheaton to see Starbucks, doughnut shop on Roosevelt Road

Several discussions during Wheaton City Council meetings in the past six months have noted how difficult drawing new business to the eastern corridor of Roosevelt Road will be.

Monday night proved all it will take is some individual entrepreneurship and lots of coffee.

The city council approved two new developments in the corridor that will bring up to four new businesses to town.

The first will be a 1,750-square-foot Starbucks at 1003 E. Roosevelt Road. It will be the first Starbucks in the city with a drive-through. The site is the former home of a gas station.

The other development will be a 5,600-square-foot retail building at 926 E. Roosevelt Road with room for up to four businesses. The first tenant to sign a lease is Dunkin' Donuts, which will most likely also have a drive-through window.

Conductor to return

Wheaton's popular summer orchestra concerts will continue to have the direction of conductor Bruce Moss for at least another two seasons.

The Wheaton City Council approved a contract extension for Moss for the 2008 and 2009 seasons Monday night.

Moss plans and prepares the entire summer concert series. That includes the selection and preparation of music, scheduling of guest artists, housing and travel arrangements for those guests, assisting with the purchase and location of music and the planning and negotiations for special events. Moss also oversees the rehearsal of the Wheaton Municipal Band and conducts their performances.

For that work, he'll earn $21,244 in 2008 and $21,775 in 2009. The city had given Moss three-year contracts in the past. The current renewal is only for two years.

The band's first concert this year will be on June 5.
