Services held for man killed in Rolling Meadows cop shooting

About 50 friends and family of Michael P. Chybicki, who was shot by Rolling Meadows police last weekend, said goodbye t o him on Thursday at St. Colette Church in Rolling Meadows.

"Brother Mike was taken so quickly from us," said the Rev. Dennis M. Zalecki, in his only personal reference to Chybicki in the service.

Rolling Meadows police said Chybicki, 44, was intoxicated and threatening officers with knives about 9 p.m. Saturday on the 4800 block of Weber Drive.

Chybicki, whose last-known address is in Lake in the Hills, was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was later pronounced dead.

Rolling Meadows Mayor Ken Nelson and Police Chief Steve Williams have said that they are confident police acted properly. They have provided only limited details about what happened, however, saying they are awaiting results of an investigation by Illinois State Police.

There was no word Thursday on when that report would be forthcoming.

They said police were called because Chybicki was intoxicated and threatening people. An officer fired one shot at Chybicki after he failed to respond to an order to put down his knife and the use of a Taser did not seem to have any effect on him, they said.

"The whole event is a tragic one," Nelson said Wednesday. "It's a tragedy for the man and his family and for our community."

Chybicki was born July 18, 1963, in Chicago. He worked in the transport business for many years, according to his obituary.

Survivors include his mother, Mary; a brother, James (Maria) Chybicki, and a sister, Julie (Steven) Zimmer. He was uncle to Joseph Lee, Timothy Paul and Justin Michael Chybicki, and Riley Nichole, Alexis Zuzanne and Zachary Paul Zimmer.
