Fruendt named all-state

Batavia senior Nick Fruendt earned a spot on the Associated Press Class 4A all-state team, which was announced Wednesday.

Fruendt averaged 20 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2.5 steals a game for the 21-6 Bulldogs.

His future Northwestern teammate John Shurna made the second team.

Fruendt was joined on the first team by Warren junior Brandon Paul, Homewood-Flossmoor's Kevin Dillard, Oak Park's Iman Shumpert and Farragut's Mike Dunnigan.

Burlington Central junior Mike McCurdy made the Class 3A all-state honorable mention. Jacobs' John Moran and Schaumburg's Cully Payne were among the all-state honorable mention selections in Class 4A.

West alumni game:ŒThere will be a reception for West Aurora High School alumni on April 4 prior to the start of a basketball fund-raiser featuring alumni from East and West Aurora high schools.

The West Aurora High School Alumni Association is hosting the gathering from 4:30-5:45 p.m., April 4, in the Distinguished Alumni Hall of Honor area of the auditorium foyer.

The gathering precedes the "11th Annual Basketball Shoot-out!" a fund-raiser for the Marie Wilkinson Child Development Center, which begins at 6 p.m. in the West gym. Female players take the floor first, followed by a contest between male alumni.

Tickets for the games are $7 in advance, $8 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Steven's Cleaners East, Steven's Cleaners West, Sophisticated You and True Shades.

In addition, the West High alumni group invites all West alumni to a post-game gathering at Luigi's Pizza on Prairie Street in Aurora from 9-11 p.m. for pizza.

Women's softball

Cebular honored:ŒAurora University women's softball senior third baseman Dana Cebular was named Northern Athletics Conference Softball Student-Athlete of the Week.

Cebular led AU on the week in which the Spartans opened the season in Florida at the Rebel Spring Games; Cebular led the Spartan offense to a 5-3 record (7-3 on the trip). In the leadoff slot for AU, Cebular had a .750 on-base percentage while going 16-for-24 at the plate with 7 walks. She also knocked in 7 runs, including a home run.

The Spartans play again March 25 at North Central College for a non-conference doubleheader.
