Briefs: DUI charges filed

A 47-year-old Streamwood woman has been charged with DUI following a three-car crash Monday afternoon in Bartlett. Police said Kathleen O'Connor, of 607 Deerfield Drive, rear-ended a 2003 Infiniti at 1 p.m. while traveling east on Route 20. The Infiniti was forced into another car and rolled over, coming to rest on the median. O'Connor's car then struck a tree. Authorities said they believe O'Connor was driving under the influence of alcohol. She and the driver of the Infiniti were taken to St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates, where both were treated and released. O'Connor, who police said was also cited for driving too fast for conditions, was released on bond. She'll appear in court March 25 in Rolling Meadows.

Fine arts leader recognized

Mary Luckritz, director of fine arts at Rolling Meadows High School, is being recognized as part of Illinois Arts Education Week, sponsored by the Illinois State Board of Education and the governor's office. She was one of two arts administrators statewide who were recognized; the other was from Carbondale. "The arts play a pivotal role in our students' lives and are just as important as math, science or reading," state Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch said in a statement. "Arts education brings balance to students lives and, for many, this will be the only opportunity they have for this type of self expression."

Assault trial to continue

Prosecutors rested their case Wednesday in the second day of the trial of Phillip Sorrentino, the Elgin man accused of assaulting his father-in-law with a hammer in May 2007. Assistant state's attorneys called two witnesses to testify: a detective and the victim's daughter, Elizabeth Fernandez. The defense will present its case when the trial resumes at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Rolling Meadows. The defense alleges the aggressor was the father-in-law and that Sorrentino acted out of self-defense.
