Police silent about fatal shooting in Rolling Meadows
Funeral services for the man shot to death by Rolling Meadows police over the weekend have been set for Thursday.
On Monday, police refused to provide any details on the shooting, in which they say Michael Chybicki, 44, was intoxicated and threatening officers with knives at about 9 p.m. Saturday in the 4800 block of Weber Drive.
Rolling Meadows Mayor Ken Nelson, who was briefed by police, said an officer had fired one shot at Chybicki, after ordering him to put down a knife and then also tasering him, which seemed to have no effect.
Chybicki had been acting in an "extremely erratic manner," which prompted residents to call police, Nelson said.
"I know the officer well, and if he had not felt that his life was in danger, he would not have done that," Nelson said.
Anthony Gaspari, Rolling Meadows police public-information officer, said he couldn't comment because the incident is under investigation by Illinois State Police.
He would not release the names of the officers involved or say how many people were at the scene. He would not explain whether one officer fired or more than one fired -- and why they felt lethal force was necessary when Chybicki had only knives.
Also, police did not provide information on whether the officer who shot the man is off patrol for the time being.
A state police spokesman failed to return phone calls seeking comment.
Chybicki, whose last-known address is in Lake in the Hills, was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was later pronounced dead.
Services for Chybicki formerly of Rolling Meadows, will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Meadows Funeral Home, 3615 Kirchoff Road, Rolling Meadows and proceeding to St. Colette Church for Mass at 10 a.m.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Chybicki was born July 18, 1963, in Chicago. He worked in the transport business for many years, according to his obituary.
Survivors include his mother, Mary; a brother, James (Maria) Chybicki, and a sister, Julie (Steven) Zimmer. He was uncle to Joseph Lee, Timothy Paul and Justin Michael Chybicki, and Riley Nichole, Alexis Zuzanne and Zachary Paul Zimmer.
