Briefs: Gambling screening

In recognition of National Problem Gambling Awareness Week, which runs through Saturday, the Renz Addiction Counseling Center will offer free gambling screenings from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at its headquarters at Two American Way, Elgin. Tax help for seniors

Free confidential tax preparation service will be provided to senior citizens Thursday afternoons through April 10 at the Geneva Township Senior Center, 400 Wheeler Drive, Geneva. Appointments are required. Call (630) 232-3602.

Civil War ball planned

The Farnsworth Mansion Foundation will have its 8th Annual Civil War Ball at 5 p.m. Saturday at Baker Community Center, 101 S. Second St., St. Charles. The fundraiser includes a buffet dinner, period music and dance instruction. Period attire is welcomed but not required. Advance tickets are $20 a person, $30 a couple and $1 for children ages 12 and younger. Tickets purchased at the door will each cost an additional $5. Proceeds fund the rebuilding of Farnsworth Mansion, along Route 25 in St. Charles, as a Civil War museum. Call (630) 587-1530.

Egg hunt in South Elgin

The South Elgin Recreation Department will host an egg hunt at noon March 22 at Kenyon Woods off Raymond Street in South Elgin. Parking is available at South Elgin High School. The program is geared to children up to 12 years old and participants should bring their own baskets. The hunting areas will be assigned by age groups. Kids can also visit the petting zoo, ride ponies and dance to the music of a disc jockey. The department also is accepting non-perishable donations to the local food pantry for an entry into the holiday basket raffle. Call (847) 622-0003.
