Addison Trail to host flower show
This winter's vile accumulation of snow may have you wondering if Mother Nature took spring off the schedule for 2008.
Keep the faith, snow-haters. A group of Addison Trail High School students are coming to the rescue with a colorful peek at the coming season.
The school's 36th annual Flower Show will be at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Addison Trail, 213 S. Lombard Road. It's the Chicago area's longest-running flower show.
Students in the school's horticulture program and local florists all will demonstrate how to use various blooms and greens in arrangements. They'll also explain what occasions each centerpiece might be best for, said John Turner, Addison Trail's science department chairman.
Once arrangements are complete, 15 student couples will parade the floral masterpieces up and down the aisles of the auditorium so audience members can get a closer look -- a closer look at the flowers, certainly, but also at a more mysterious sight: the students themselves, who will be decked out in formalwear.
"It isn't often you find high school students in formalwear, except for prom," Turner joked.
More than 70 floral centerpieces, corsages and boutonnieres will be raffled to guests at the end of the evening.
Admission costs $8 for general admission and $6 for senior citizens, which includes raffle entry. Proceeds benefit the William Rook Scholarship Fund. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door. For details, call (630) 628-3300.
