Art students put sculptures on display at NCC gallery

Three art students are presenting their sculptures in a free exhibit that runs through April 2 in the gallery of North Central College's Oesterle Library, 320 E. School St., Naperville.

The exhibit, "Silhouettes: A Study of Women," features the work of senior art students Katie Nemec, Katy Luxion and Pakize Arslani.

The public can meet the artists and view their work during an opening reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the gallery.

The exhibit coincides with National Women's History Month and its 2008 theme: "Women's Art: Women's Vision."

The show and its subject matter were the students' idea, Assistant Professor of Art Christine Rabenold said.

"They were interested in how women experience various milestones or events that influence who they are," Rabenold said in a written statement.

"Their interest evolved during their interactions with each other while taking my advanced ceramics class. It's been a pleasure to work with these three women and to witness the growth and evolution of their craft into their own body of artwork."

Nemec, of Montgomery, is majoring in studio art, with a minor in secondary education. Inspiration for her ceramic sculptures and intaglio prints stemmed from interviews with four women in her family, as well as research of women's history.

Luxion, of Aurora, is studying studio art and interactive media studies/graphic design. Her work uses various forms of sculpture to show how the media affects young women's body images.

Arslani, of Downers Grove, is majoring in art education. She has a wide background in the fine arts, including drawing, painting, sculpture, music and theater.

The exhibit is open during library hours: 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday; and noon to midnight Sunday.
