The Warren-Newport Public Library District serves a population of approximately 58,000 within a 55-square-mile area that covers all or most of Warren and Newport townships, including Gurnee, Wadsworth, Park City, Wildwood, Grandwood Park, Old Mill Creek, and portions of Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Villa and Waukegan.
Teens activities: Teens in sixth grade and up are invited to the Warren-Newport Public Library for a series of activities.
• A Drawing Contest opens Friday with a gallery showing and awards on April 20.
• The TAG Team teen advisory group will meet on at 1 p.m. March 15.
• A Pizza Taste-Off and Game Day will be held at 2:30 p.m. March 15.
• The next meeting of the Anime Club is from 4 to 6 p.m. March 27.
Take a Sunday sojourn: Ralph Danielsen will take adults on an armchair exploration of southwestern Germany at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Free computer classes: The Warren-Newport Public Library offers learning opportunities to beginner computer users with free classes: Using the Internet at 7 p.m. Monday and Basic E-mail at 7 p.m. March 12. Participants will have hands-on instruction in a small group setting with up-to-date equipment and skilled teachers from the library reference staff. Reservations are required.
Care Coach: The Lake Forest Hospital Care Coach will visit the Warren-Newport Public Library from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday with free health screenings and child immunizations. No appointments are necessary.
One Book discussions: As part of the Warren-Newport Public Library's first One Book, One Community program, Debbie Hoffman will lead several talks on Erik Larson's "The Devil in the White City." An account of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893, the book relates the story of architect Daniel Burnham and serial killer H.H. Holmes. Sign up for any group. Reservations are requested:

• Hoffman will also lead a discussion at 1 p.m. April 7 at the Warren Township Senior Center.
Book discussions: Share ideas on books in open book discussion groups under the leadership of librarian Debbie Hoffman.
• The Tuesday nonfiction group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to tackle "Sisters: Catholic Nuns and the Making of America" by John Fialka.
• The Tuesday evening fiction group will discuss "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson and "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
• The Saturday fiction group will discuss "The Last Witchfinder" by James Morrow at 1:30 p.m. March 15.
A movie and coffee: Head to the library at 7 p.m. March 14 for a showing and discussion of "Gone Baby Gone," rated "R" for language and violence. Hosts Melissa and Don Henderson will lead a talk about this critically acclaimed film by first-time director Ben Affleck. This program is intended for adults and requires reservations. Doors open at 6:45 p.m.
Preschool storytime: To help children discover the joy of books, the library will offer preschool storytimes through April 12. Online registration is under way for children ages 2 through 5 (pre-kindergarten). In addition, drop-in stories for all families are offered at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at 10 a.m. Saturdays.
One Book, One Community: The Warren-Newport Public Library has announced its first One Book, One Community program. Everyone is invited to read "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson, a best-selling and award-winning book set in Chicago during the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, and discuss it at several scheduled events. More thank 100 paperback copies of the book are available for checkout. Book discussions have been scheduled, and the program will close with special performances during National Library Week in April. All programs require registration.
IM the reference desk: The reference desk of the Warren-Newport Public Library offers a new instant message service. It's easy to do and is faster than e-mail, and no special software is required. Visit the library's homepage and click on the "IM Reference" link for adults or kids, during regular library hours. Once connected, type in question and the reference staff will help out.
Library Café: Visitors to the Warren-Newport Public Library can enjoy their coffee and more with the opening of K-Sweets Cafe. The café serves sandwiches, soups, salads, coffee, sweets and paninis. The café is also a free wireless hotspot. The café can be reached at (847) 782-2233.
Monthly gatherings: Several library-sponsored groups meet monthly at the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee and welcome new members. Three book discussion groups cover fiction and nonfiction on scheduled days, evenings and Saturdays. Stitch and Share meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. A local chapter of the Red Hat Society, Lovely and Lively Ladies of the Library, meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday. Finally, the Friends of the Library, meet at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday.
Math tutors: The Warren-Newport Public Library hosts free volunteer math tutors who are Motorola professionals from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays for drop-in help for fifth-grade through senior high school students.
