Class 4A East Aurora sectional semifinals
No. 13 Glenbard West (16-12) vs. No. 9 Bartlett (21-9)
Another game, another upset opportunity for Glenbard West. The Hilltoppers knocked off No. 4 seed Wheaton North and No. 5 Naperville Central to claim their second straight regional title. Now they look to win a second straight sectional crown behind 6-foot-8 Northwestern-bound John Shurna, who's averaging 22.5 points and 12 rebounds.
Shurna's post dominance carried Glenbard West into the regional final, but key contributions from others forged the path to the title. Senior guard Shane Bryant knocked down two huge 3-pointers and scored all 8 of his points in the fourth quarter of his team's 40-36 win over Naperville Central.
Six-eight sophomore Tyler Warden scored 6 points, but made a bigger impact on defense and on the boards. With 6-4 bruiser Chris Watt also banging inside, Glenbard West becomes extremely tough to match up against.
Bartlett, though, has the size to counter the Hilltoppers. Six-nine Kamil Janton, headed to Eastern Michigan, had 19 points and 13 rebounds in an 85-63 regional final win over No. 1 Batavia. Six-five Cory Hrynyk, who hounded Bulldogs standout Nick Fruendt on defense, is a team leader and someone to watch on the perimeter along with leading scorer Luke Labedski. Marc Little, another fine defender, also averages double-digit scoring.
It sounds simple, but the battle for points will be decisive. Bartlett's averaging 65 per game while Glenbard West's stingy defense allowed more than 60 points only three times this season.
