The almost daily campaign mail wouldn't be so bad if it provided some factual information with which to make an informed judgment. The Republican stance on trying to garner support is focused only on false fears and terrorism rather than facts.
"Bill Foster wants to raise your taxes by $3,914." "You can't trust the tax-and-spend liberals." "I will never turn my back on our troops."
First of all, whether anyone agrees on how or why we got into Iraq, we're there. No one has proposed not supporting our troops. Republicans are content to spend billions on an unjust war delaying the inevitable, meanwhile exposing thousands of American soldiers to death or disability. Returning soldiers are not being properly compensated and care for the disabled soldiers is appalling.
There was no plan and preparation was poor from the beginning. Common sense would tell anyone that going to war requires a plan, proper preparation and equipment, and an exit strategy.
We shouldn't trust tax-and-spend liberals, but we should trust Republicans who have plunged us into the greatest debt this country has ever known? The national debt is now in excess of $9 trillion -- more than $30,000 for every man, woman and child.
Jim Oberweis believes we can further afford tax cuts for big business and the rich by controlling wasteful spending. Apparently propping up big business and the rich is supposed to make the world go round. Perhaps they'll be able to afford another illegal alien for a nanny or yard work.
The Republicans have never cut wasteful spending unless you count reducing payments for Medicare, education and other necessary social programs directly affecting children, the elderly and disabled.
You don't get rid of debt by continuing to spend what you don't have. We need to focus on the economy, education and health care. People need jobs.
Watch out for your wallet because the Republicans have emptied it and stuffed it with IOUs. That's not extreme -- it's outrageous.
We're reaping the results of that misguided approach. As the economy slides into the toilet, don't pull the handle by electing more of the same.
