Lions deal Rogers to Browns

The Detroit Lions traded Shaun Rogers to the Cleveland Browns for cornerback Leigh Bodden and a third-round pick in the April draft.

The deal was announced Saturday by the Lions, a day after a trade with Cincinnati fell through that would have shipped the talented but inconsistent defensive tackle to the Bengals in exchange for third- and fifth-round picks.

The 6-foot-4, 340-pound Rogers, a two-time Pro Bowl player, has 29 sacks and 253 tackles in his career.

Bodden spent his first five seasons with the Browns. He has 208 career tackles, 12 interceptions, and 3 fumble recoveries.

Rogers faded in the second half of last season and the Lions did, too, finishing with only 1 win in eight games.

He did, however, have a career highs in sacks (7) and forced fumbles (4) after playing in all 16 games for the fourth time in his seven-year career. He also has blocked 11 kicks, 4 more than any other player since 1991.

Gilmore signs with Bucs: Free-agent tight end John Gilmore and defensive end Jimmy Wilkerson have signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Gilmore, who entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2002, played the past six seasons with the Bears. He has appeared in 86 regular-season games, starting 10, and has 21 receptions for 194 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Browns sign Stallworth: The Cleveland Browns have added another prime target for newly re-signed quarterback Derek Anderson, agreeing with New England veteran Donte' Stallworth on a seven-year contract.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Stallworth has played six years and 84 games in the NFL with New Orleans, Philadelphia and the Patriots. He has 279 receptions for 4,213 yards and 31 touchdowns.

Last season with New England, Stallworth had 46 receptions for 697 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Jets get Faneca: The New York Jets and Pro Bowl left guard Alan Faneca have agreed to terms on a five-year, $40 million contract, making the former Pittsburgh player the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

Lynch stays put: Pro Bowl safety John Lynch took a pay cut to remain with the Denver Broncos for a fifth season, passing on a chance to retire or test free agency. Lynch was scheduled to make $2 million in 2008 and hesitated about returning to the team after he was asked to take a salary cut, the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News reported. Lynch was due a $1.12 million roster bonus March 4.

Rams ink Brown: The St. Louis Rams took the unusual step of targeting a kicker on the first day of free agency. They quickly landed Josh Brown, whose track record they know all too well.

Brown, who signed a five-year, $14.2 million contract Saturday as replacement for the retired Jeff Wilkins, has an 80-percent success rate on field goals for his career. He tied an NFL record with 4 game-winning field goals in the final minute of regulation or overtime in 2006, and 2 of them stunned the Rams.
