Single-car crash shuts down Elgin-O'Hare Expressway

The Elgin O'Hare Expressway was shut down for about 20 minutes because of a car crash early Friday afternoon.

A man driving in the eastbound lanes east of Roselle Road crashed his car at 4:01 p.m. and ended up in the grassy median, said Illinois State Police Sgt. A. Pelletier.

The fire department was called to extricate the trapped driver, whose name was withheld by police.

He remains in critical condition at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove

Pelletier said the entire expressway was shut down for 20 minutes about 4:55 p.m. while a medical helicopter was flown to the scene. She said most westbound lanes of the Elgin-O'Hare was reopened at 5:15 p.m.

The one closed eastbound lane was reopened at 5:19 p.m., and the entire expressway was back to operating normally at 5:56 p.m.

The driver was alone in the car, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Traffic was rerouted to the Roselle Road exit.

Roselle and Itasca police were on hand to assist at the scene.
