Queen of Rosary in regional science fair

• The following students from Queen of the Rosary School, Elk Grove Village, will participate in a regional level science fair March 12 at Fairview South Middle School in Skokie: Stephanie Curcio and Samantha Koop, "How Does Your Water Measure Up?"; Sarah Lahtinen and Lauren O'Connor, "Ice, Ice Baby"; Stacy Ludkowski and Sidra Shafiq, "Pop Rocket Explosion"; Danielle Gdowski and Paige Shallcross, "Och Ahh … Quick Relief"; Chris Meyers and Matthew Weiler, "Solar Size Me"; Claudine Schiffer and Emily Simon, "Pop Goes the Pressure"; John Bunnell, "An Inconvenient Study -- Global Microwaving"; and Jessica Rushing, "Pop goes the Popcorn."

• James B. Conant High School senior Tommy Oates of Elk Grove Village has completed the requirements for, and having been examined by an Eagle Scout board of review, was found worthy of the rank of Eagle Scout. As a member of Troop 496 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Schaumburg, Oates has held the positions of senior patrol leader, scribe and den chief.

At Conant, Oates plays saxophone in the concert and jazz bands and is a section leader for the school's marching band. He is also on the chess team, runs varsity cross country and works on the theater set crew.

Oates' Eagle project involved working with local churches to collect used sports equipment. Working with Play it Again Sports, he was able to donate over $3,000 in new athletic equipment to Chicago Hope Academy, a local nonprofit institution for underprivileged children.

• Dr. Carey B. Dachman, rheumatologist and pain management specialist; Dr. Chirag H. Shah, chiropractic and spinal rehabilitation; and Dr. Roberto P. Segura, neurology, all of Pain Therapy Associates, Schaumburg, were nominated as Top Doctors by Chicago Magazine.

• Leilani Chee of Buffalo Grove, an undergraduate student in human development and family studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, received the Jonathan Baldwin Turner Scholarship from the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.

Chee, a Adlai E. Stevenson High School graduate and the daughter of Richard and Susan Chee, plans to pursue a master's degree in social work and eventually work in a school, adoption agency or a rehabilitation center. The scholarship recognizes academic excellence, good citizenship and leadership skills.
