Penguins win despite being outshot 52-21

Evgeni Malkin and Jeff Taffe scored first-period goals for trade-depleted Pittsburgh, providing early offense for the Penguins in a 4-2 victory over the host New York Islanders on Tuesday night.

Just hours after the Penguins made the biggest splash on trade deadline day by acquiring star forward Marian Hossa from Atlanta for forwards Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen, Pittsburgh pulled out a win despite being outshot 52-21.

Ty Conklin (17-4-5) kept the Penguins in front throughout by stopping a career-high 50 shots. Jordan Staal and Connor James -- just up from the minors -- also scored for Pittsburgh.

Hurricanes 2, Devils 1 (OT): Sergei Samsonov tapped in his own rebound with 3:24 left in overtime to lift host Carolina past New Jersey, snapping the Devils' five-game winning streak.

Samsonov finished with two goals for the Southeast Division-leading Hurricanes,who won their third straight.

Capitals 4, Wild 1: Brooks Laich had 2 goals and assisted on two others to lead host Washington over Minnesota. It was the first 2-goal and 4-point game for Laich, and gave the Capitals their first win in four games.

Minnesota lost its fourth straight as Brank Radivojevic had the lone goal for the Wild.

Bruins 4, Senators 0: David Krejci scored his first NHL goal, and Tim Thomas stopped 22 shots for his second shutout of the season to lead host Boston over Ottawa for the Bruins' fourth consecutive win.

Zdeno Chara scored twice, including an empty-netter, and Shawn Thornton also scored for the Bruins.

Canadiens 5, Thrashers 1: Chris Higgins had 2 goals and an assist as host Montreal scored four times in the first half of the third period to beat Atlanta.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 41st goal in the second for the Thrashers.
