Scammers steal cash and jewelry in Schaumburg
Schaumburg police are warning residents not to let strangers into their homes following the second burglary in less than a month where the robbers posed as someone they weren't.
The latest incident occurred about 3 p.m. Saturday, when a man rang the doorbell at a home on the 500 block of John Court. When a woman answered the door, police said, the man told her he'd recently bought a house two doors down and then walked inside.
The woman asked him to leave, but the man instead walked to the back of her home, saying he needed to see her rear lot line, police said. He said his wife wanted to build a fence and he needed to see how far back it would go.
The woman then again asked the man to leave, and he did.
When walking through her house, the woman noticed that a basement door usually kept shut was now open. She called 911.
A search of the house revealed $800 in cash and five gold necklaces valued at $2,000 were missing from a bedroom.
Police said they believe another person entered the home and stole the items while the first man distracted the homeowner.
Sgt. John Nebl reminded residents to not let strangers into their homes. If someone does try to enter without permission, call police immediately.
"Simply call 911 right and get help over there," Nebl said.
A similar scam occurred Jan. 25 when a Schaumburg woman had jewelry stolen from her home on the 400 block of Oleander Drive after letting men inside who said they were from the water company.
Anyone with information on either burglary is asked to call Schaumburg police at (847) 882-3534.
