BG/Wheeling wins, lets Fremd advance

Buffalo Grove/Wheeling (BGW) won its second game against Fremd this postseason, this time 4-1 in the Scholastic Cup playoffs, by scoring early and often.

"We scored first, then they scored," said BGW coach Bob Wagner. "Then we scored the next three times."

BGW had apparently finished second in the Metro Northwest, which would have qualified for the Metro Scholastic Cup. But because of major injuries and schedule conflicts, BGW took a team vote and decided to give the opportunity to Fremd.

"We just don't have as full of a team as Fremd does," Wagner said. "We thought it was the right thing to do."

Fremd will play top seed Glenbrook North in the first round of the Metro Scholastic Cup today at 12:30 p.m.

Fremd will then play its opener in the Blackhawk Cup, meeting Neuqua Valley on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in Romeoville.

BGW plays its Blackhawk Cup opener Wednesday at 8:10 p.m. at the Glenview Indoor Ice Center. BGW meets the winner of Sunday's game between Latin and Glenbard North.

Fremd 2, PREP 1: In a defensive battle, Fremd (2-3) came beat Prospect/Rolling Meadows/Elk Grove/Palatine for the second time this post-season.

"We had some great goaltending by (Patrick) Fitton," said coach Bill Martin. "He made some great saves."

Even though his team went winless, PREP (0-4-2) coach Bob Sibik said he wasn't disappointed.

"The kids started out a little slow," Sibik said. "But we finished strong."

PREP's next game is today against the Bloomington-Normal Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. at West Meadows Ice Arena for a berth in the Blackhawk Cup Elite Eight.

Founder's Cup

Huntley 3, Carmel 2: Carmel had an opportunity to lock up second place in the Founder's Cup and advance to the Metro Founder's Cup, but Huntley had other plans.

"Huntley just hung in there and played a great game," said Carmel coach Mark Schwartz. "We really needed that one,"

Huntley 4, Carmel 0: Carmel (3-3) had another shot to advance but came out flat against Huntley, which advanced in the playoffs.

"We were just outplayed," Schwartz said. "Huntley really came to play."

Hersey 4, CHS 0: Hersey finished atop the Metro Northwest Founder's Cup standings with its first shutout of the season.

"We just played a great game," said Hersey coach Pat Schey. "I'm very proud of our guys."

The Huskies outshot the CHS 41-16.

Hersey next plays Sunday at 6 p.m. at West Meadows.

Hersey also plays in the Blackhawk Cup Sweet 16 Friday against Andrews.

Blackhawk Cup

Carmel 3, Montini 1: On senior night, Carmel prevailed 3-1 in what coach Mark Schwartz called "The Catholic School Clash."

"It was a great atmosphere," Schwartz said. "Everyone contributed and everyone played well."

Carmel plays Jacobs today at 4:10 p.m. at the Crystal Lake Ice House.
