Swimmers brave frigid water to raise money for Special Olympics
Weather officials believe that Fox Lake will be above the freezing point Sunday afternoon, but temperatures in Nippersink Lake will be frigid.
So why not put on a swim suit and jump in?
That's what Fox Lake officials and members of the Special Olympics of Illinois are hoping people will do at the Lakefront Park as they bring the second annual "Polar Plunge" to the village.
The event takes place at 1 p.m. Sunday at the park on Nippersink Drive. Registration is at 11 a.m.
The event is sponsored by Comcast Sports Net, The Fox Lake police, the village of Fox Lake and the Daily Herald.
Participants in the event are asked to raise $75 in donations from friends, family and co-workers prior to taking a jump in the freezing lake.
Ruth Michniewicz, spokeswoman for the village's parks and recreation department, said 92 people have already registered for the event and that an additional 25 to 50 normally register the morning of the plunge.
"We expect this to double in size this year," she said. "From what I understand, the whole police department is jumping in the water this year. So, it's going to be big."
Last year, 98 people plunged into the water of the Chain O' Lakes.
People are allowed to wear any attire except a wet suit. Shoes are also recommended for safety reasons.
And, as always, costumes are encouraged.
"You know, I don't think it matters what the weather is going to be like," Michniewicz said with a laugh. "People will be freezing when they get out, so, honestly, does it matter how cold it is that day?"
She said heated tents and rescue personnel will be on hand to care for plungers the day of the event.
The plunge in Fox Lake is one of 16 being held around the state between Feb. 23 and March 8.
The next area event is set for 1 p.m. March 1 at Sunrise Beach in Lake Bluff. Another is scheduled at 1 p.m. March 2 at Twin Lakes in Palatine.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Special Olympics Illinois. It is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
