U-46 school news

Here is what's in the news at Elgin Area School District U-46 schools.

School holiday

• All schools and district offices will be closed today in observance of Presidents Day.

Bartlett High

• On Thursday evening, the Bartlett High School bands will present "Pasta and Pops Night" at the school, 701 Schick Road, Bartlett. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria, followed by a Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. This event has become a growing tradition to raise money for the band to travel to and perform at Disney World during spring break.

South Elgin High

• On Tuesday at 7 p.m., the Beginning and Intermediate bands consisting of fifth- and sixth-graders from Garfield, Clinton, Willard, Fox Meadow, Nature Ridge, Wayne, and Liberty elementary schools will perform in the South Elgin High School auditorium, 760 E. Main St. Admission for this event is $1 per student, $2 per adult, and $6 per family.

Abbott Middle

• On Friday, Abbott Middle School will hold the annual Honors Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the Commons, 949 Van St., Elgin. The breakfast is hosted and planned by the staff, to honor students who were in the top 10 percent during the first and second quarters of the school year. Principals, along with fifth- and sixth-grade teachers from Gifford, Hillcrest, Lowrie, Otter Creek, and Washington elementary schools, also will be invited to attend, as well as central office administrators and principals of Larkin and South Elgin high schools.

Kenyon Woods Middle

• On Thursday evening, the Kenyon Woods Middle School band will perform with the South Elgin High band, at 7 p.m. in the South Elgin High School auditorium, 760 E. Main St., South Elgin. Admission for this event is $1 per student, $2 per adult, and $6 per family. Senior citizens, age 62 and older, with a platinum card may attend for free. Bartlett

• On Friday, the Family Health and Fitness Fair will be held in the Bartlett Elementary School gym, 111 North Ave., Bartlett. This will wrap up a 21-day challenge. During the fair, the kids and their parents can visit booths from local vendors and participate in a health related activity. They will have approximately 10-20 booths, and will also offer demonstrations throughout the evening i.e., dancing, karate, exercise class, etc.

Century Oaks

• On Tuesday, kindergarten to third-grade students at Century Oaks Elementary School in Elgin will present a Spring Sing at 7 p.m. at Larkin High School, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin.

Sheridan

• On Thursday, a concert of fourth- and fifth-graders will be presented at 7:15 p.m. at Sheridan Elementary School, 510 Franklin Blvd., Elgin.

Spring Trail

• On Wednesday, a Battle of the Books match against Wayne Elementary will take place after school in the Spring Trail Elementary School gym, 1384 Spring Valley Drive, Carol Stream.

Washington

• On Thursday, a Book Swap will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Washington Elementary School gym, 819 W. Chicago St., Elgin. Students will bring books from home and swap with other children. In the last two years, 500 books were exchanged during this event each year.

Willard

• On Friday, the South Elgin Lions Club is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on behalf of Bradley Wendt, a sixth-grader at Willard Elementary School in South Elgin, who was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease. The dinner will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at South Elgin Lions Club, 500 Fulton Street, South Elgin. Cost is $6 for adults, $3.50 for children, age 12 and younger, or $20 per family. The fundraiser is to help Bradley's family cover hospital costs and medication. If you would like to make a direct donation, an account has been set up in Bradley Wendt's name at Associated Bank, 300 N. McLean Blvd., South Elgin, IL 60177.

In other news

• The Marching Storm, South Elgin High School's band, was scheduled to perform in a parade Feb. 17 at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Congratulations to band director Kurt Dobbeck and his students.

The SEHS Choir and Orchestra have also accepted an invitation to perform in Walt Disney World during "Magic Music Days" from Feb. 28-March 3. Choral director Karen Brhel and orchestra director Josh Stewart will accompany 60 students. Congratulations to all.

• Students from the district's five high schools competed for honors in Vision 2008, a juried art exhibit at the First Community Bank in Elgin. More than 150 pieces including paintings, sculpture, jewelry and photographs were judged in three categories: creativity and originality, composition, and technique. Five students received awards and 12 students received honorable mentions. Winners included: first place, Rafael Aguilar of Bartlett High School; second place, Faith Betinis of Streamwood High School; third place, Nicole Daffron of South Elgin High School; fourth place, Melissa Bayert of South Elgin High School; fifth place, Martina Preradovic of Elgin High School.

The exhibit will continue through March 7 at First Community Bank, 50 Tyler Creek Plaza in Elgin from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. A special thanks to First Community Bank's officers for allowing the district to use their facility to feature the talents of U-46 students.
