Aurora bank robbery suspect arrested
Quick work by Aurora police resulted in a suspect being arrested within six minutes of a robbery at a West Suburban Bank branch, authorities said Thursday.
According to the criminal complaint filed by the FBI in Kane County, 46-year-old Anthony Crosby entered the bank at 101 North Lake St. at 4:54 p.m. Tuesday and handed the teller a note indicating he had a gun and a bomb and demanding money.
After turning over $1,747 in a plastic bag he provided, tellers carefully watched him walk away as they called 911, authorities said.
Aurora police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said Crosby is a homeless man who frequents a shelter at 600 S. River. He said police have had contacts with Crosby in the past.
At 5:01 p.m. officers traveling south on Wilder Street saw Crosby, who matched the robber's description, walking within two blocks of the bank. He had $1,647 in his possession, Ferrelli said.
"It was great police work by these officers to get to the scene so quick to interview witnesses and get the description out so quickly," Ferrelli said. "And it was nice work of the officers to recognize the description and get (Crosby) while he still had the proceeds in his possession."
Ferrelli said police turned Crosby over to the FBI early Thursday morning as he waited to be charged.
FBI officials said they still are investigating the robbery.
