Briefs: Times for Geo-Karis wake and funeral
Former state Sen. Adeline Geo-Karis' wake will be 4 to 9 p.m., Friday, at Illinois Beach Resort and Conference Center, which is at a park bearing her name. The wake will be in the Illinois Ballroom. Visitation is set for 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Her Greek Orthodox funeral follows at 10 a.m. in the facility's Grand Vista Ballroom overlooking Lake Michigan. A luncheon is scheduled immediately after the funeral. Anyone who wishes to speak publicly about Geo-Karis may do so at the luncheon. Louis Atsaves, an attorney and Geo-Karis' campaign manager, said the Greek Orthodox religion permits only clergy to deliver a eulogy at a funeral. The state resort is near Zion where Wadsworth Road ends east of Route 41.
Libertyville parking garage
Construction documents will be prepared for a parking garage in downtown Libertyville, following action Tuesday by the village board. The board authorized an agreement with Walker Parking Consultants to prepare plans and specifications for a parking structure at the southeast corner of Brainerd Avenue and Lake Street. The $749,300 contract also will include services for an adjoining surface parking lot. The deck cost is estimated at $9.5 million. Village officials said they want the project on a fast track.
Help count birds
The Vehe Farm Foundation and the Prairie Woods Audubon Society are hosting the Big Backyard Bird Count from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. The entire community is invited to attend the event and help count bird species at Vehe Farm in Deer Park. Those who attend are encouraged to bring binoculars and a pencil. Foundation and Audubon Society members will be on hand to help identify the various bird species. The Vehe Farm is at 23680 W. Cuba Road, Deer Park. Call the Vehe Farm Foundation at (847) 331-0967 to register.

TIF vote petition presented
Long Grove resident Monica Bedrosian delivered a petition to the village board Tuesday on behalf of residents asking that a tax increment finance decision be placed on the ballot as a referendum. The board has been considering creating a TIF district to help revive the downtown area; however, the 300 residents who signed the petition feel that it should go to a vote of the whole town. Village President Maria Rodriguez has said that the village gave residents enough of a chance for input with public hearings and officials don't think a referendum is warranted. The board has made no final decision yet on creating the TIF district.
