Hunter, Isles break through
Trent Hunter scored a goal and set up 2 others for the New York Islanders, who broke a pair of skids with a 4-3 victory over the slumping Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.
New York hadn't won at home in seven games, since beating New Jersey on Dec. 29 (0-5-2). The Islanders also didn't have a victory anywhere since a 6-3 win at Carolina on Jan. 22, also a span of seven games (0-6-1).
Hunter scored for the first time in a month, and Jeff Tambellini and Sean Bergenheim added goals in the second period for the Islanders, who are tied for 12th in the Eastern Conference and beat the Flyers for the first time in four meetings this season.
Rick DiPietro made 26 saves to win for the first time since Jan. 16 and send the injury-riddled Flyers to their fourth straight regulation loss.
Hurricanes 3, Bruins 2: Andrew Ladd scored twice in the first 6:33, and Carolina held on to beat host Boston after Shawn Thornton had 2 goals in a 27-second span late in the third period. Former Bruins first-round draft choice Sergei Samsonov had a goal and an assist to help the Hurricanes open a 3-0 lead with 1:31 left in the second.
Lightning 3, Canadiens 2: Vinny Prospal scored twice, including the go-ahead goal midway through the third, and host Tampa Bay defeated Montreal. Prospal made it 3-2 at 11:51 of the third off a pass from Vincent Lecavalier, who stole the puck behind the Montreal net.
Predators 4, Red Wings 2: Alexander Radulov scored 2 goals to lead host Nashville over Detroit. Radulov, Martin Erat and J.P. Dumont scored for the Predators, who sent the Red Wings to their fourth straight loss.
Sabres 5, Senators 1: Thomas Vanek scored three times for his first career hat trick, leading Buffalo over Ottawa. Vanek opened the scoring in the second and added 2 goals in the third, including his 20th of the season on a 5-on-3 with 3:58 remaining for his first 3-goal game.
