Ice Skating in the Park: Are you a winter person?

The Lake in the Hills Parks and Recreation Department encourages you to bundle up, grab your ice skates and a Thermos of hot chocolate and head to Sunset or Stoneybrook parks to enjoy the outdoor ice skating. Rinks open to the public beginning Parks are open from sunrise to sunset. Green flags indicate that the ice is ready for skating (no hockey).

For youth

KV Idol Contest: KVTV.biz, the new Kids' Internet TV site, is looking for kids to be in the new KV Band. The Parks and Recreation Department of Lake in the Hills is looking for kids between 9 and 14 years old who love to sing. The winning KV Artist will record an original song at the new Recording Artists Workshop in LITH, to be played at all KV events and on the KVTV.biz Web site. All participants should be prepared to sing a one-minute song of their choice (no background music needed).

All kids who audition will receive an award, a VIP Ticket to see KV's new game show (TOPIC), and a special memento just for trying out.

Participants also will be featured in the spring issue of KV Chronicles and on KVTV.biz News. Winners will be announced on KVTV.biz by 3 p.m. March 3. Try out for the band from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 29 at the village hall community room. Resident rate is $15; nonresident rate is $18.

Mad Science Physics Lab: Want to see how bouncy balls are made? You'll make your own and test how high it will go in our workshop all about motion and force.

Join the Lake in the Hills Parks and Recreation Department along with a real Mad Scientist from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 22 in the village hall community room to explore friction, centrifugal force and gyroscopes. There will be a contest to see whose Mad Science Mobile can win a race. Program is for kids, ages 6 to 12. Resident fee is $31, nonresident fee is $38.

Summer Camp Early Bird Registration: The Lake in the Hills Parks and Recreation Department's FuntastiCAMP officially begins in June, but if you register by May 1 you'll save up to $10 off per session.

Space is limited, so register early! Due to overwhelming demand the camp is now offering one-week sessions in both full- and half-day programs. Extended time options also are available for those working parents who need them.

This primarily outdoor program includes weekly themes/parties, swimming at Woods Creek Lake, one field trip per session, sports, games, crafts and fun.

For adults

Girls on Guard Program: The Lake in the Hills Parks and Recreation Department has teamed up with instructors from Focus Martial Arts to offer a self-defense class especially for women, age 14 and older. This program is designed to address the type of assaults in social settings where people are close together. Learn the tactics and techniques women need to defend themselves from assault by a known assailant, which accounts for 75 percent of all attacks against women.

Become acquainted with the most common sexual and physical assault scenarios and learn how to fight back and win. Class will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Focus Martial Arts, 9342 Virginia Road. Resident rate is $50; nonresident rate is $60.

'Crop' Night: Join the Lake in the Hills Parks and Recreation Department in the village hall multipurpose room from 6 to 11 p.m. Feb. 29 for a night of fun, laughter and creativity as you scrapbook your memories. Enjoy the ample space available to spread out your supplies and scrapbook with family and friends. Fee is $7 and includes snacks, pizza, drinks and a door prize.
