Regina Dominician 58, Lakes 36

A night after recording its first win in school history, Lakes' girls basketball team was trying for its first two-winning streak.

Regina had other plans, however.

The third-seeded Panthers upended the No. 18 Eagles 58-36 on Tuesday night in a semifinal of the Class 3A Lakes regional in Lake Villa.

"Our win was a good one (against St. Scholastica on Monday night)," Lakes coach Elizabeth Hinkle said. "We still had a pretty good performance tonight.

"Regina is a high seed for a good reason. We did a good job handling their pressure. We just don't have a lot of scorers and we couldn't match up with them."

Regina (13-17) got off to a quick start, opening up a 13-0 advantage in the first three minutes of the game with full court pressure. The Panthers led 21-10 at the end of the quarter.

"We didn't want to take anything for granted," Regina coach Jim Russo said. "I saw (Lakes) play extremely well on Monday night. We had to concentrate pretty hard on their post play. They didn't look like a team that had lost so many games in a row."

The Panthers kept their poise in the second quarter and outscored the Eagles (1-28) 15-6 for a 36-16 halftime advantage.

Carmel-transfer Kelcey Traynoff scored 9 of her 19 points in the first half for Regina. The Panthers' Kelly Fitzpatrick added a game-high 21 points.

Lakes' Mandy Schellinger and Alyssa Mol each had 10 points and pulled 6 rebounds.

The Eagles were without leading scorer Keshia Cunningham, who tore her ACL against Antioch a couple of weeks ago.

Vernon Hills 64, Sullivan 43: At Vernon Hills, Amy Burton scored 20 points to lead the eighth-seeded Cougars.

It was the first-ever regional-semifinal win for Vernon Hills (11-18), which will play No. 2 Marian Central for the regional championship at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Cougars led only 19-15 after one quarter and 30-27 at halftime. They were up 45-34 after three quarters and continued to pull away.

"I was proud of the way the girls played," Vernon Hills coach Paul Brettner said.

"I thought the second half we played real well offensively and defensively."
