Batavia vs. Vikes -- again
The rivalries don't stop in the postseason.
In Class 4A girls basketball, No. 7 Batavia takes on No. 10 Geneva at 8 p.m. in the second game of the Bartlett regional tonight.
This will be the fourth time these teams have played one another. The three previous games were close, and Batavia won all of them. The most recent win was by 1 point last Friday for the Western Sun Conference title.
"It's a good thing," Batavia coach Tim DeBruycker said of playing the Vikings again. "We won't have a letdown … we'll be ready to play."
"The best part is that we get the chance to avenge (the losses) and get the chance to continue our season," Geneva coach Gina Nolan added. "It's a new season and we start over. That's the nice thing about the way the IHSA works. We get a new chance … we'll be good to go."
Batavia (20-4) has won five of its last 6 games and is led by Natalie Tarter's 15.6 points per game. Geneva (20-6), which has also won its last 5 of 6 games, is led by Taylor Whitley's 17 ppg.
The winner will play either No. 2 Schaumburg or No. 15 Bartlett (10-18) in the regional final at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
In the Class 4A Larkin regional, the rivals from St. Charles will have the chance to play one another -- if each team wins their semifinal game.
At 6 p.m. tonight, No. 1 seed St. Charles North will play No. 4 Larkin, which the North Stars beat earlier this year in Upstate Eight Conference play.
Following that game, the North Stars' rival, No. 2 seeded St. Charles East, faces No. 3 South Elgin (15-13). The Saints beat the Storm earlier this year.
St. Charles North (20-5), winners of their last 10 of 11 games, are led by Kelsey Smith's 15.4 ppg. St. Charles East is 14-12 and is guided by Tasha Lalos' 9.2 ppg.
"We are ready, we are absolutely ready," St. Charles North coach Katie Sauber said. "We are at a good point right now where things have really come together for us. I think they are playing pretty well."
The regional title game takes place Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Continuing in Class 4A at Waubonsie Valley tonight, No. 5 West Aurora kicks off the postseason against No. 11 Benet at 8 p.m.
The Blackhawks will play the winner of No. 3 Waubonsie Valley (24-2) or No. 14 Oswego East. Those teams play at 6 p.m.
West Aurora is 18-8 and is led by the area's leading scorer, Kyra Watson (19.6 ppg). The title game is Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
In Class 3A action at the Yorkville regional tonight, No. 1 Rosary plays No. 4 Yorkville at 6 p.m.
The winner of No. 2 Oswego/No. 3 Sandwich will face either the Royals or Foxes the regional final at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The Royals were the only local girls team in the Tri-Cities Area to win a regional title last year. They have won 13 of their last 14 games and are led by Jordan Rettig's 13.7 ppg.
At Class 3A Kaneland, the Knights are the only local team to host a regional. In the first game tonight, No. 1 Huntley will play No. 4 Sycamore at 6 p.m.
Following that game will be No. 2 Burlington Central (18-10) against No. 3 Kaneland at 8 p.m., with the regional final taking place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Knights topped the Rockets earlier this year.
Kaneland capped the regular season winning its last 3 games and is 9-15. The Knights are led by Katie Hatch's 9.1 ppg.
