Lecture series resumes

The Thursday Evening Lecture Series at the St. Charles Public Library resumes this week with a presentation about Jane Addams and other influential women. The lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the Carnegie Room, 1 S. Sixth Ave. Presenter Barbara Joan Zeitz will discuss Addams' influence on national affairs and her status as the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Tax-prep help available

Waubonsee Community College provides tax return preparation services for low- to moderate-income people as part of the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Tax assistance sessions are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays and 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the Aurora campus, 5 E. Galena Blvd. Families with annual incomes of less than $40,000 are eligible for assistance, as are individuals with annual incomes of less than $15,000. People seeking tax help should bring a copy of their 2006 tax return, if they have one, W-2 forms and 1099s from all 2007 jobs, Social Security cards for all family members and a photo ID. Enjoy the blooms

The Batavia Orchid Society will hold its annual show and sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the DuPage County Fairgrounds, 2015 Manchester Road, Wheaton. Tax help for seniors

Free confidential tax preparation service will be provided to senior citizens Thursday afternoons starting this week until April 10 at the Geneva Township Senior Center, 400 Wheeler Drive, Geneva. It is being provided by the AARP Tax-Aide volunteers. Appointments are required. Call (630) 232-3602.

Dad, son baseball camp:

St. Charles North High School will have its 3rd Annual Spring Training Father and Son Baseball Camp on Sunday. The program is open to children in second through eighth grades and their fathers. Admission is $110 a duo or $175 for groups of three or more. Training will be from 1 to 5 p.m. at North, 255 Red Gate Road. Participants will receive a meal and T-shirt, but must provide their own bats and gloves. Enrollment is limited to the first 120 registrants. Call (630) 443-8562.

Batavia power outage: Residents in Batavia lost power briefly Sunday morning, according to the police department. It is not known exactly how long power was down, but officials estimate the outage began about 10:30 or 11 a.m. Power was restored about 11:30 a.m., officials said.
