Shootout proceeds help fight cancer
At the core of this shootout, there's a competitive spirit -- and a compassionate heart.
High school hockey rivals from Naperville and Aurora will battle it out on the ice today for a cause most everyone can empathize with -- the fight against cancer.
The sixth annual District 203/204 Shootout for Cancer is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
"It's not a game, like a competitive game. It's a fun game. It's a fun, friendly rivalry," said Becky Cizek, mother of a freshman hockey player and a member of the committee organizing the event.
Then she adds: "There's a trophy involved."
The game pits a team of Naperville North and Naperville Central players against a team of players from Neuqua Valley and Waubonsie Valley.
Each team also will include several members of the Naper Warriors girls hockey club and the Tomahawks, a Chicago-based club for developmentally disabled athletes, Cizek said.
The shootout was started in 2003 by Brian Kenney, then a student undergoing treatment for cancer. He has since recovered and graduated from Neuqua Valley, she said.
"He wanted to give back to the cancer society because of the part they played in his recovery," Cizek said.
Organizers were lucky to secure the International Ice Centre in Romeoville at a time of year when ice time is in demand, she said.
"This is hockey season. We're getting ready to go into the playoffs," she said.
Skates, the Chicago Wolves mascot, is expected to appear at the game, she said. The evening also will feature a silent auction, raffle and luminaria ceremony in honor of cancer victims and survivors.
All proceeds will be donated to the DuPage chapter of the American Cancer Society, she said. The money helps fund research and helps provide support services for cancer patients who live in the area.
"Our goal this year is $10,000," she said.
