Fremd 48, South Elgin 41

The Fremd girls basketball team gave South Elgin several opportunities to put it away Thursday night.

The Storm didn't take advantage and it cost them a nonconference victory.

Fremd rallied from a 10-point deficit with 10 minutes remaining to earn a 48-41 victory in South Elgin.

"I'm proud of (the players off the bench). They just turned them over," Fremd coach David Yates said. "There was a five-possession span and we were back in the game. After that, everybody else followed suit."

South Elgin, which didn't make a field goal outside of 3 feet in the first half, opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Genevieve Johnson to take a 24-17 lead.

Fremd turned the ball over on its first seven possessions of the third quarter, but never trailed by more than 11 points. The Storm led 28-17 after Courtney Kumerow, who dominated inside most of the game, grabbed 2 offensive rebounds and converted the second one for a basket.

Kaitlin Jones finally got the Vikings (16-10) going. The senior scored on a 3-point play and had a steal and layup in a span of 25 seconds as Fremd cut the deficit to 28-22. Another offensive rebound and putback by Kumerow and a basket from Lindsey Helton gave the Storm (14-12) a 32-22 lead.

The Vikings tied it at 36-36 on a Sam Thelin layup with 4:54 left. After a South Elgin turnover, one of eight in the final quarter, Taylor Glassman (15 points) gave Fremd its first lead since it was 7-6 with an aggressive drive and layup with 4:25 left.

Fremd overcame 8-for-16 free-throw shooting in the final four minutes for its 10th win in 11 games.

"I'm glad we're playing pretty well because we're going to need to (in the postseason)," Yates said.

Glenbrook S. 55, Hersey 51: Hersey took visiting Glenbrook South (21-5) to overtime before falling in its final regular season game at Ken Carter Gymnasium.

The Huskies (10-19) were led by freshman Megan Rogowski (20 points), senior Sarah Stoltzner (14) and senior Emma Kuhns (10).
