Elgin, Hoffman companies announce layoffs
Layoffs at local firms announced Tuesday reflect changing markets.
Elgin-based Ibiden Circuits of America Corp. is laying off 64 people by March, according to the Warn Report, filed with the state of Illinois.
"Our marketplace just evaporated," said Bud Bruley, director of human relations at the maker of circuit board prototypes.
Bruley said the company's largest customer, Schaumburg-based Motorola Inc., no longer needed its circuit boards.
A shift at Chrysler also triggered a layoff of 51 people in Belvidere at the ArvinMeritor Inc. plant. The supplier of suspension modules for the front and rear end of Chrysler cars was forced to let its third shift go after Chrysler recently did the same, according to Derek Vitatoe in the Human Resources department.
In the fall, BP America warned it intended to make more of its gas stations franchise owned, which meant it needed fewer administrative and back-office workers to support company owned stations, according to Scott Dean, a BP spokesman. BP intends to layoff 90 people by April, according to the firm.
Cleveland-based National City Corp. already announced it will exit its wholesale mortgage lending business, focusing instead on retail mortgage lending. In Hoffman Estates, 51 jobs will be eliminated, spokesman Chris Kemper said.
Lake Forest-based Pactiv Corp. said it intends to layoff 96 people in Wheeling by April. On Jan. 23, the company reported its gross margin declined by 27 percent, in part due to the cost of raw materials. The consumer and foodservice packaging firm could not be reached for comment.
