Hersey 43, Rolling Meadows 20

According to freshman Megan Rogowski, Hersey's girls basketball team was not about to take Rolling Meadows for granted despite 2 wins over the Mustangs earlier this season.

"We knew the third time could be the charm for the other team," Rogowski said.

Instead, the Huskies had their lucky charms -- Pam Stoltzner and Pam Tunney, mothers of seniors Sarah and Maggie.

The Huskies dedicated the game to the "Pams" and gave them few worries, building a 22-3 lead en route to a 43-20 triumph.

Hersey (9-16) took home third place with the win and a 3-1 record in the Season's End tourney which concluded Monday at Fenton.

Oak Park-River Forest won the title over Hinsdale South, 54-47, in overtime.

Hersey is 15-1 at the tourney the last four years.

"When you get a big lead like we did, sometimes you take things for granted," Rogowski said. "But we finished well."

Megan (14 points) and her sister Kelly Rogowski (8) were name to the all-tourney team.

Sarah Stoltzner added 9 points for the winners, followed by Maddie Swan (5), Emma Kuhns (4) and Maggie Tunney (3).

Stoltzner's last-second 25 foot 3-pointer gave Hersey a 10-1 lead after one quarter.

"We got off to a good start and carried it through," said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. "We rebounded great (20 rebounds in the first half). It was nice to be able to get a lot of kids into the game."

Meadows (6-20) was led by Shannon McGuire (8 points) and Maddy Urban (5), who was named to the all-tourney team.

"This was not a good night for us," said Mustangs coach Patrick O'Connell. "Hopefully it will be better tomorrow at Palatine."

Fenton 46, St. Viator 45: This was a heartbreaker for the Lions.

Senior Jenny Muench's running 16-footer went in and out at the buzzer allowing Fenton to post the 1-point victory in the fifth- place game of the Season's End.

"Jenny got a great look and put up a good shot" said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness. "It just didn't fall."

"Fenton played a great game. And that No. 31 (Samantha Rubright) played a whale of a game."

Rubright, a 5-foot-10 junior, led the Bison (16-12) with 17 points, while senior guard Tricia Chiamas had 9, including what proved to be the game-winner.

Chiamas took a deflection from Mia Sansone and swept ahead for a layup which put Fenton ahead 46-45 with 12 seconds left.

"Tricia is a gamer," said Fenton coach Tim Anderson. "We've had so many close game like this all season. That's why I have less hair than I even have."

Fenton came back from 6-point deficit late in the third quarter.

Senior Jayme Biagi (6 points) hit a 16-footer to bring the Bison within 43-41 with 3:24 left, but 2 free throws by Kelly Hendricks put the Lions ahead 45-41.

Fenton closed with a 5-0 run to win it.

Hendricks, a 5-foot-4 junior guard, was named to the all-tourney team for St. Viator.

"That last shot was just unlucky (Muench's in-and- out jumper at the buzzer)," Hendricks said. "But we had a good chance there. I think we needed to box out better in the game and get more open looks."

"Someone's got to win and someone's got to lose," Bjerkness said. "Fenton deserved it. I thought our kids played real hard."

Junior Colleen Nolan added 12 points for the Lions (11-16), while Toni Callero and Susan Hohenadel each had 8.

Seniors Stephanie Pingel and Brittany Potenza added 5 points apiece for Fenton.
