Men from 'water company' steal jewelry

A Schaumburg woman had jewelry stolen from her home after letting men inside who said they were from the water company.

According to police, two men knocked on the door of a home on the 400 block of Oleander Drive about 3:20 p.m. Jan. 25 and said they needed to come inside to test the water.

The woman agreed and took the two men to the kitchen, where one of them began turning on the faucet and checking underneath the sink.

Police said the second man kept the homeowner engaged in conversation while three other men entered the home unbeknownst to her.

After a few minutes, police said all five men left the home. That's when the woman went into her bedroom and found that things had been moved around.

She then noticed some jewelry, including her wedding band, was missing.

Police said all five of the men were thought to be between 30 and 40 years old.

Anyone with information is asked to call Schaumburg police at (847) 882-3534.

Sgt. John Nebl said Schaumburg police are considering issuing a new community alert against these types of scams, which often target seniors.

While such scams do crop up from time to time, the department has so far considered this one to be an isolated incident, Nebl said.

Police generally recommend that, if someone comes to your door claiming to be on a service call, ask for an ID and call the utility or company in question to make sure the visit is legitimate before allowing entry to your home.
