Briefs: Anonymous calls at issue

Some backers of a Tuesday ballot proposal seeking permission for a $38.5 million building project at Grant Community High School in Fox Lake say they are upset with anonymous telephone calls to residents about the referendum. Kim Schnoor of Grant Citizens Helping Students says her group, which is promoting a "yes" vote, has received complaints about the calls, which she said have provided false information about ample state money being available for the expansion. If voters approve the referendum proposal, Grant would pursue an expansion to accommodate 2,300 students. Proponents say taxes won't increase if voters approve the measure. However, an owner of a home with a hypothetical value of $200,000 would see a roughly $132 decrease in the annual tax bill from Grant District 124 if the request is rejected.

Tollway work coming

Lane closures on the Tri-State Tollway between Half Day Road and the Waukegan toll plaza are scheduled throughout February. The closures will allow crews to begin shifting northbound traffic to the right shoulder and two right-most lanes to build a crossover lane for southbound traffic. In early spring, southbound traffic will shift to the crossover lane, median shoulder and left-most lane as work begins to rebuild and widen the southbound lanes. A similar crossover lane will be built for southbound traffic between Lake-Cook Road and Balmoral Avenue. Work on the southbound lanes from Russell Road to Grand Avenue was completed in December, and work to rebuild and widen the northbound lanes will begin this spring.
