Winter storm whitewashes suburbs

Morning rush-hour drivers and anyone trying to catch a flight is feeling the brunt of the winter storm that could dump a foot of snow on the Chicago region before it ends this afternoon.

Roads across the six-county region were snow-packed, slowing traffic to a crawl, as plow operators struggled to keep pace with the snow that began falling in early evening Thursday and continued steadily throughout the night and into the morning today.

At O'Hare International Airport, more than 600 flights were canceled overnight, and an additional 500 flights were preemptively canceled today, said Gregg Cunningham, a spokesman for the Chicago Aviation Department.
