Police: Loaded gun found in student's car near Schaumburg High
A 17-year-old Schaumburg High School student has been charged with felony gun possession of a stolen gun, which police said was found in her car near the school Tuesday.
Ashley M. Ross, 17, of 1001 Webster Lane in Schaumburg, was charged with felony possession of a stolen firearm as well as unlawful use of a weapon and lack of a firearm's ID card.
Police said they received a tip from a parent that a student was planning to confront another student and might be planning to bring a gun to school.
Ross's car was parked several blocks away from the school, police said.
Police also charged an 14-year-old juvenile who they said stole the gun from her father's gun safe and supplied it to Ross.
The gun was never taken into the school, police said.
Ross's bond was set at $10,000 and she was given a 24-hour curfew in bond court.
The 14-year-old was detained at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Facility awaiting a hearing to be held today.
Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 spokesman Tom Petersen said at no point were students or staff endangered. A note informing the community about the incident was to be drafted and distributed later today.
"Student and staff safety is something we take very seriously in District 211, so we're working closely with law enforcement officers in this matter," he said.
