The Warren-Newport Public Library District serves a population of approximately 58,000 within a 55-square mile area, that covers all or most of Warren and Newport Townships, including Gurnee, Wadsworth, Park City, Wildwood, Grandwood Park, Old Mill Creek and portions of Grayslake, Millburn, Lake Villa and Waukegan.

Preschool storytime: To help children discover the joy of books, the Library will offer preschool storytimes Monday through April 12. Online registration is under way for cardholders for children ages 2 through 5 (pre-kindergarten). In addition, drop-in stories for all families are offered at 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and at 10 a.m. Saturdays beginning Feb. 5.

Meet author Lee Child: Award-winning British suspense writer Lee Child will visit the library at 7 p.m. Thursday. "Bad Luck and Trouble," the latest in a series featuring character Jack Reacher, was recently released. The author will sign books for fans following the presentation. Reservations are requested.

Teen activities: Teens in sixth grade and up are invited to the Warren-Newport Public Library for a series of activities under the direction of Diane Braun and Denise Brown. The TAG Team teen advisory group will meet at noon Saturday. The next meeting of the Anime Club is from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 21. Back by popular demand is the Teen Mystery Lock-in from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 8. Permission slips are required for this evening of fun and sleuthing.

Sign with your baby: The Warren-Newport Public Library invites parents to an introduction to this program with Sue and Rick Rizzo from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Learn about using sign language to better communicate with infants, toddlers and preschoolers through the integrated use of visuals, music and nursery rhymes. The program is for adults and requires registration.

Book discussions: Share ideas on books at the Warren-Newport Public Library in open book-discussion groups under the leadership of librarian Debbie Hoffman.

• The Tuesday non-fiction group will meet at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 5 to discuss "700 Sundays" by Billy Crystal.

• The Tuesday evening fiction group will discuss "Digging to America," by Anne Tyler, at 7 p.m. Feb. 5.

• The Saturday fiction group will discuss "The Sea," by John Banville, at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 16.

• As part of the One Book, One Community program, Hoffman will lead a talk at Borders in Gurnee at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 to discuss Erik Larson's "The Devil in the White City." Reservations for the Borders program can be made through the store.

Gather and stitch: From 6 to 9 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month all stitchers are welcome to come the library to enjoy a relaxing evening of sharing and conversation while working on projects and learning new stitches. The informal group session is open to all levels and needlecrafts, including knitting, quilting, cross stitch, crochet, tatting and crewel. Young stitchers with an adult are also welcome. The library's collection includes hundreds of books on hand and needle crafts

The next meeting will be Feb. 6.

Take a Sunday sojourn: Ralph Danielsen will take adults on an armchair exploration of the American Southwest in the Sunday Sojourns series at 2 p.m. Feb. 10. The final lecture in the series will be March 9, and take visitors through southwestern Germany.

Movie and discussion: Head to the Warren-Newport Public Library at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 for a showing and discussion of "Talk to Me," rated "R." Hosts Melissa and Don Henderson will lead a talk about this story of a radio personality "telling it like it is" during the turbulent 1960s in Washington, D.C. These programs are intended for adults and require reservations. Doors open at 6:45 p.m.

One Book, One Community: The Warren-Newport Public Library has announced its first One Book, One Community program. Everyone is invited to read "The Devil in the White City," by Erik Larson -- a best-selling and award-winning book set in Chicago during the World Columbian Exposition of 1893 -- and discuss it at several scheduled events. Over 100 paperback copies of the book are available for checkout. Book discussions have been scheduled, the author will appear at the library Feb. 24, and the program will close with special performances during National Library Week in April. All programs require registration.
