Lauzen best choice for 14th District

Voters complain that they have no meaningful choice, having to choose between the lesser of many evils.

They tire of politicians making worthless promises. People believe that, no matter how they vote, it makes no difference. But voters can make a difference in the Feb. 5 election for the 14th District U.S. House seat vacated by Dennis Hastert.

The leading Republican candidates are Chris Lauzen and Jim Oberweis.

I submit that a vote for Lauzen is a vote for honesty, integrity, responsiveness and competent leadership. Chris Lauzen is a certified public accountant and a state senator. He is considered conservative socially and economically, yet there is far more.

He is also an honest man.

I wrote him when I learned that our Senate was considering special-interest legislation that would stifle competition, eliminate choices and raise prices by prohibiting out-of-state retailers from shipping wine to Illinois consumers. Similar laws elsewhere have been declared unconstitutional.

I felt betrayed by my elected officials, who sold me out to a few wealthy businessmen (the wholesale liquor distributors) with clout. Only Lauzen responded to my letter.

He said that it persuaded him that House Bill 429 was bad for Illinois consumers and that he would oppose it. Unfortunately, it was passed and signed into law. After the vote, Chris informed me that he was one of only four senators who voted against it.

Chris voted with his conscience in the face of tremendous pressure from lobbyists and Senate leadership.

I have since learned that Chris has a long record of "doing the right thing" in Springfield on a multitude of other issues.

Chris' candor was so refreshing that I decided to give our electoral process one last chance. Please join me in voting for Chris Lauzen.
