ACC 76, Marian Central 42

Aurora Central Catholic boy basketball coach Nate Drye might have to invest in some hammocks or comfortable cots if junior forward Mike Adams performance against Suburban Catholic Conference rival Marian Central Catholic is indicative of what a nap can do for you.

Adams was a one-man wrecking crew from the opening tip, scoring 15 of his game-high 27 points in the first quarter, as the Chargers put the game away early and coasted to a 76-42 victory in Woodstock.

"I had a good nap on the bus ride over," Adams said when asked what was behind his all-around performance.

Adams had a double-double at the half and finished with statistics any player would envy. In addition to the points, he pulled down 13 rebounds, had 6 blocked shots and 4 steals for the game. He sat out most of the fourth quarter.

"Obviously Mike was just phenomenal," said Drye. "Mike had such energy tonight that anything that came down there it seemed like he was rejecting it and then whenever they missed it seemed like he was grabbing all the rebounds, too. He just brought a lot of energy to the table tonight and everybody fed off of him, it was fun to see."

Adams got help from his brother Mark, who scored 13 points and had 2 blocks of his own against a Marian Central Catholic (3-19, 2-9) team that does not have a player taller than 6-foot-2 on its roster. That made the match up with Adams and 6-foot-6 Charger center Nick Czaja a tough one for the Hurricanes, as Czaja also reached double figures with 10 points and 5 blocks.

"We thought they were going to play a zone," said Drye. "They played zone against us last time, so when they came out in a man to man our kids were pretty fired up and we went straight into the high-low and the kids did a great job pushing the ball up the floor and our spacing was great. The kids are very unselfish and I think that is one of the things that makes us good is the fact that the kids are unselfish and they don't care who is getting the points. It's fun to coach kids like that."

"We had no match for their big guys," said Marian Central coach Curtis Price. "At the start of the game, we were taking the ball to the basket and we got our shots blocked and then we got a little bit hesitant about driving and settled for jumpers."

The Chargers (20-2, 10-1) went on an 18-3 run to end the first quarter and only allowed the Hurricanes two field goals in the second quarter to extend their lead to 40-18 at the half. It was almost a larger lead as Adams was so hot that he almost made a length of the court heave as time ran out in the second quarter.
