Faith Christian boys win 17 games
The boys basketball team at Faith Christian School in Geneva capped an exciting 2007-08 season by earning third place at the inaugural Fox Valley Athletic Conference seventh- and eighth-grade tournament.
The Warriors opened the tournament as the No. 2 seed. They beat Fox River Country Day School of Elgin 38-22 in the first round behind 15 points from Luke Boggs before falling to Quest Academy of Palatine 38-25 in the semifinals on January 16. They then bounced back to beat DaVinci Academy of South Elgin 40-21 in the third-place game.
The Warriors' final record was 17 wins and 9 losses. This
included an 8-4 record in varsity games, a 5-0 varsity record in conference play, a 6-1 mark in JV games and a 4-0 JV conference record. The Warriors' sixth and seventh grade squad also edged Franklin Middle School in two overtimes at the Two Rivers seventh-grade tournament. The 17 victories tied the single-season school record for boys basketball.
Providing leadership for the team were eighth-graders Luke Boggs, Matt Acosta, Matthew Arnold and Efren Valdespino. Sam Talarczyk also played three games for Faith before missing the rest of the season due to injury.
Seventh-graders were Steve Benson and Cass Smuk. The sixth-graders who participated were Adam Rojas, Jake Hoepner, Chad Erickson, Josh Fowler, Kris Brandli, Michael Arnold, Jacob Thompson, Bailey Hill, Jason Davis and Jeremiah Heinicke. The fifth grade was represented by Lucas Hoepner, Sean Norman, Marcus Crescenzo and Jacob Riley. The players come from St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Wayne and Elburn.
