Wrap: Jacobs rolls by CL South
When you think of Jacobs boys basketball the names of John Moran, Conrad Krutwig and Tim Moran automatically come to mind.
You can add 6-foot-4 senior forward Zack Peterson to that list. Peterson's 14 points, which included four 3-pointers, helped lead the Golden Eagles to an easy 60-30 win over Crystal Lake South in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game in Algonquin Wednesday night.
"They were sagging on Conrad and John and I was able to get some open looks," said Peterson. "My job is to run the floor and play good defense. After I hit that first 3 I felt I could have a good night."
Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle praised Peterson's effort.
"He is the most improved player on the team." Said Hinkle. "He is a very good defensive player. He always guards the other team's top scorer. He never complains and he feeds off of Conrad and John. He is certainly an unsung player."
Jacobs (16-2, 2-0) started fast at both ends of the court. The Golden Eagles, led by 6 points from Krutwig, jumped off to a 8-0 lead.
South (10-7, 0-2) didn't score until Eric Wilde nailed a long 3 from deep in the left corner to make the score 8-3 with 3:06 left in the quarter. The Golden Eagles scored the final 7 points of the quarter to lead 15-3 after 8 minutes.
But the Gators, who made only 1-of-10 shots in the first quarter for 10 percent, battled back in the second quarter. Making 4-of-5 from 3-point range, the Gators Pulled within 27-21 when Chris Reuter nailed a 30-footer as time elapsed in the half.
Jacobs came out roaring in the second half. With Peterson canning a pair of 3s and John Moran hitting a pair of layups, the Golden Eagles scored the first 12 points of the half. Making 6-of-7 shots, Jacobs held a 39-21 lead with 5:14 left in the quarter.
Outscoring the Gators 20-4 in the third quarter, Jacobs took a 47-25 advantage into the fourth quarter.
In the second half, Jacobs outscored South 33-9. The Gators made only 4-of-22 from the field for 18 percent during the final 16 minutes.
"We lost our intensity in the second quarter," said Hinkle. "We came out in the third quarter with a chip on our shoulder. We got some easy baskets from our defense. We played like we were capable of in the second half."
Krutwig aided Peterson with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists in the game, the Gators made only 10-of-43 from the field and committed 25 turnovers.
"We did a great job in the second quarter and had some momentum going into halftime." said Crystal Lake South assistant Jason Bott, who subbed for head coach Dan DeBruycker, whose wife had a daughter Tuesday. "Their press really hurt us in the third quarter. They got easy baskets and we could never recover."
Reuter and Wilde led South with 8 points each.
