Tennis coaching workshop offered

The Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association, in conjunction with the United States Professional Tennis Association Midwest Division, is hosting the 25th Chicago Tennis Workshop at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort.

The two-day event takes place Friday and Saturday. Coaches and teaching professionals can register at the Marriott Lincolnshire Tennis Center on Friday from 7 to 8 a.m.

This year's workshop will include the following speakers: Arvid Swan (Northwestern men's coach), Bob Bayliss (Notre Dame men's coach), Mark Bey (CARE Academy-USTA), Brian Gottfried (former U.S. Davis Cup player), Peter Burwash (Canadian Davis Cup Star), and Dr. Jack Groppel (internationally recognized authority on application of sports science to human performance).

The workshop will also take the opportunity to honor all IHSTCA Hall of Fame coaches. Members of the IHSTCA Hall of Fame will be recognized at the workshop meeting from 4:15-5:30 on Friday afternoon. They will also be honored during a Social Mixer following the meeting at the Marriott.

Coach Greg Beckway from Glenbrook North will be the 2007 Hall of Fame inductee.

Beckway led Glenbrook North to two state titles and great success during his tenure as the boys tennis varsity coach. Coach Beckway has also worked with the girls program including coaching the girls varsity for the past two seasons.

Beckway will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during the IHSTCA luncheon on Friday from 12:10-1:40. The luncheon will be in the Marriott and is open to coaches and other tennis enthusiasts.

The IHSTCA will also honor the following coaches at the luncheon:

Girls head coach of the Year: Dr. Peter Freischlag (Downers Grove South)

Girls assistant coach of the year: Robin Kramer (Hinsdale Central)

Boys head coach of the Year: Greg Cohen (Warren)

Boys assistant coach of the Year: Dan Miller (Downers Grove South)
