Naperville cops probing MLK leaflets
Naperville police increased their presence at Naperville's North Central College on Monday after the discovery of threatening literature on campus.
Police went to the campus just after 6:30 a.m. to investigate a small number of leaflets containing threatening statements about a Martin Luther King Jr. Day memorial prayer breakfast held later in the morning, Cmdr. Dave Hoffman said.
He said the literature appeared to have been dropped overnight near the west side of Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. The threats were general in nature and not directed any specific group.
"We don't believe there to be an immediate threat based on the contents of the pamphlets," Hoffman said. "But we are looking for anyone who may have put them there or anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity."
College spokeswoman Kim McCullough said the breakfast, featuring keynote remarks on King's message from 1990 alumna Dawn Pleas-Bailey, Ed.D., was uninterrupted.
"We're very confident that we're being watchful and taking the right precautions," she said. "We believe this to be an isolated incident."
Police are asking anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity to call the Naperville police at (630)420-6726 or North Central Campus Safety at (630) 637-5911.
Naperville Crime Stoppers are offering up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
