Elgin Community College

In a meeting Jan. 15, the Elgin Community College District 509 Board of Trustees took the following actions:

• Approved the minutes of the Dec. 13 and 21 open sessions.

• Agreed to abide by the Smoke Free Illinois Act and limit smoking on campus to only designated parking lots and courtyards.

• Discontinued the college's participation in the Student to Student Grant which charges students a voluntary 50-cent per credit hour fee to fund a state assistance program due to the small number of ECC students eligible for the program, effective summer 2008 semester.

• Authorized a $25 fee to staff, students and vendors who request more than two replacement checks in a 12-month period.

• Purchased 14 uninterruptible power supply units and related accessories from CDW Government Inc. of Vernon Hills for $107,866. The units support the college's network equipment during a power failure.

• Purchased a 2008 Dodge Caravan SE from Fenzel Motor Sales of Hampshire for $16,583.50 for student activities.

• Purchased printing and mailing services of the summer/fall 2008 credit class schedule from Warner Offset of South Elgin for $35,916.

• Purchased 11 Hewlett-Packard notebook computers for the Corporate and Continuing Education Department from Victorin Business Machines of Elmhurst for $14,212.

• Purchased furnishings for the Jobe Lounge in the Student Resource Center from Interiors for Business Inc. of Batavia for $77,809.74.

• Purchased five lecterns from Spectrum Industries Inc. of Chippewa Falls, Wis. for $10,205.55. The lecterns will be placed in new smart classrooms in the college.

• Accepted the following gifts: food, kitchen supplies, cash, a printer, books, magazines and vehicles.

• Approved the following hires: Emad Eassa as director of campus safety and Janet Whitsitt as biology instructor.

The next meeting of the board will be Feb. 19, with a closed session at 5:30 p.m. in the Fox Valley University and Business Center. A public meeting follows at 7 p.m. in UBC's Seigle Auditorium.
