Henrik Zetterberg scored the only goal of the shootout, and the NHL-leading Detroit Red Wings snapped a 3-game losing streak by beating the visiting Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Thursday night.
Dan Cleary scored twice for Detroit in regulation and Dominik Hasek made 26 saves.
Henrik Sedin had a goal and an assist for the Oilers.
Capitals 5, Oilers 4 (SO): Matt Bradley scored after 11 other Washington players missed in the shootout, the Capitals topping visiting Edmonton.
Bradley, who has 2 goals this season, finally broke the deadlock in the 12th round. Olie Kolzig then stopped Sheldon Souray, the 24th shooter in the tiebreaker, to end it.
Senators 5, Hurricanes 1: Antoine Vermette had his first 2-goal game of the season, and Martin Gerber made 36 saves to lead host Ottawa over Carolina.
The Hurricanes' losing streak reached a season-high four games. The Hurricanes have dropped eight of 10.
Canadiens 3, Thrashers 2 (SO): Andrei Kostitsyn scored with a brilliant move in the second period, then came through again in the shootout to lead visiting Montreal past Atlanta.
Kostitsyn and Saku Koivu scored in the shootout for the Canadiens, and the Thrashers came up empty in two chances against Cristobal Huet.
Maple Leafs 3, Bruins 2 (SO): Mats Sundin and Alex Steen scored shootout goals, and Toronto snapped a six-game road losing streak with a victory at Boston.
Phil Kessel and Marc Savard failed on their shootout attempts for the Bruins.
Ducks 2, Predators 1: Brandon Bochenski and Corey Perry scored goals, and Stanley Cup champion Anaheim stretched its winning streak to a season-high five games by beating host Nashville.
Blue Jackets 4, Coyotes 3: Rick Nash scored with 21.5 seconds left to lift visiting Columbus over Phoenix for its fourth straight win.
Nash took a long outlet pass from Michael Peca just outside the Coyotes' blue line and outmaneuvered defensemen Keith Ballard and Derek Morris before faking Mikael Tellqvist to the ice and firing into the open left side of the net.
Martin Hanzal had scored a power-play goal on a rebound 77 seconds earlier to tie the game at 3-3.
