Veterinarian on wheels
Veterinarian Lisa McIntyre makes house calls.
The Naperville native is filling a niche by offering veterinary services at her clients homes. Over the summer, McIntyre started The Welcome Waggin' Mobile Veterinary Service.
McIntyre treats primarily cats and dogs. Working in clinics for about nine years, the veterinarian found animals were often stressed and anxious after a car ride to an office.
Through her service she is attempting to eliminate the anxiety in both the pet owner and the animal.
"I'm satisfying a need," McIntyre said. Some elderly owners may not be able to bring their animals in on their own. "I've filled a niche," she added.
Convenient home veterinary care is also suited for working professionals, busy parents or the disabled.
"We offer complete services including wellness care, vaccinations, laboratory testing, (and) a mobile and online pharmacy," she said.
She also provides euthanasia services. The end of life services at the client's home often provide a more dignified, relaxed option, McIntyre said.
Sue Schupp of Des Plaines assists in the operation. The women say it's a small business that provides personal service. "When you call, you'll always talk to Sue or myself," said McIntyre, 33.
The idea for the mobile option developed while McIntyre was working at a clinic while raising her sons Calvin and Paul, 7, and Hugh, 2. She lives in Naperville with her husband, Andrew.
The working mom was looking for flexibility for herself as well as her clients.
The business van also stops twice a week to treat pets at the Adopt Pet Shelter in Naperville.
McIntyre grew up in a family where medicine and animals were important. An uncle, Lester Fisher, was a director at Lincoln Park Zoo while her mother is the head school nurse at Naperville Unit District 203.
McIntyre charges a $38.50 travel fee when meeting with a client. She added that her service charges are comparable to what you'd find at area clinics.
